The E911 Answer for VoIP Service Providers

IP911 Resource awarded first-ever patent for VoIP 911 call technology

DALLAS , Texas June 27, 2005   The race to provide effective and reliable 911 VoIP calling is a sprint, not a marathon, and IP911 Resource is the first one past the finish line. Just four weeks after the FCC mandated that all VoIP providers had to provide 911 services within 120 days, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has granted a patent to the Dallas-based company for its breakthrough emergency call technology via VoIP. The VoIP 911 solution, also referred to as S911 ( Superior 911), marks the first time a patent has ever been awarded for 911 VoIP technology.

“This is an affirmation that we are going to be one of the industry leaders when it comes to providing comprehensive VoIP for our customers,” said IP911 Spokesperson Mike Smith. “Emergency calling and tracking is a crucial step in the evolution of VoIP and our technology will help set the standard for this important part of the process.”

Previous attempts at developing 911 VoIP services were hampered by issues involving the mobile, transient nature of VoIP users. IP911 Resource’s patented technology solves the problem by involving the integration of GPS, software, various databases and IP telephones. After an emergency signal is activated over a VoIP connection, the software uses a GPS device to pinpoint the exact location of the caller in terms of longitude, latitude and altitude. Location software and database comparisons are then used to find the address of the emergency and the nearest public safety location and phone number to route the VoIP emergency.

The government’s deadline for implementation of 911 call technology has proven to be a thorn in the side of many VoIP providers. Any provider that does not make E911 available for its subscribers by September 19, 2005 will not be allowed to offer service in the United States . Now that the USPTO has awarded a patent to IP911 Resource, the company can afford to focus all its resources on developing and perfecting its S911 technology. IP911 Resource has taken the lead but promises not to be satisfied with its status as a groundbreaker in VoIP services.

“We solved the problem of making VoIP 911 able to be reliably tracked and pinpointed across the nation for people who use VoIP to migrate from place to place,” said Smith. “Although there are many other challenges ahead in making VoIP flawless and efficient for everyday applications, it is now clear that we are going to help pave the way for the many changes that will affect this continually growing industry.”
